Tibet is a plateau in the north and east of central china, Kashmir on the west of India and to the south of Nepal, India and Bhutan. It is the highest region on earth at 4,900 meters elevation of and often referred to as theRoof of the World and Third Pole of the Globe. Geologically, it is known as the Tibetan Plateau which includes the Himalaya and many of the highest mountain peaks of the world. Tibet is homeland to eleven Himalayan mountains over 8,000m i.e. Changtse, Gurla Mandhata, Gyachung Kang, Gyala Peri, Mt. Kailash, Kawagebo, Melungtse, Mt. Nyainqentanglha Namcha Barwa, Mt. Nyainqentanglha, Shishapangma, Yangra etc. Physically, Tibet can be divided into two parts i.e. Lake Region in the west and north-west and River region which spreads out on three sites of the former on the east, south and west. Tibet has numerous high-altitude lakes referred to in Tibetan as Tso. These include Qinghai Lake, Lake Manasarovar, Namtso, Pangong Tso, Yamdrok Lake, Siling Co, Lhamo La-Tso, Lumajangdong Co, Lake Puma Yumco, Lake Paiku, Lake Rakshastal, Dagze Co and Dong Co. The Qinghai Lake (Koko Nor) is the largest lake in the People's Republic of China. Several major rivers have their source in the Tibetan Plateau i.e. Yangtze, Yellow River, Indus River, Mekong, Ganges, Salween and the Yarlung Zangbo River (Brahmaputra River). Yarlung Zangbo River is among the deepest and longest canyons in the world. The Indus and Brahmaputra rivers originate from a Tso Mapham in the West near Mount Kailash.

Buddhism, with a history of some 1,300 years is shaped into a unique form of "Lamaism". Tibetan history, culture and religion are mixed together and infiltrate every aspect of social life. Tibetan religious arts have a distinctive style with adoption of Indian and Chinese Buddhist influence, thus forming a pearl of Oriental Buddhist art. The various people who live on the Tibetan plateau, such as Tibetans, Monpas, Lhopas and Moslems each have their own unique of traditions of marriage, burial birth and other ceremonies.
